On 6 November 2020, the UK Government launched a website (see here) designed as a guide for digital and tech firms doing business in China. The guidance explains that the UK and China can develop new technology to tackle climate change for example, create new jobs and rebalance the British economy and includes case studies showing the scale of opportunities linked to China’s growing economy. However, it also seeks to raise awareness of what the UK Government sees as potential risks of expanding into China and accepting Chinese investment, so that businesses “see the potential but know the challenge”.

“The UK is determined to support our businesses to engage with China in a way that reflects the UK’s values and takes account of national security concerns,” digital and culture minister Caroline Dinenage said in a statement.

The website encourages good practice, with links to specialist consultancies, guidance on how to conduct due diligence and potential risks UK digital firms may encounter in various stages of working with Chinese businesses and practical advice on dealing with them. This includes “ethical risks”, as well as commercial and legal risks.
